Camouflage Makeup- Kryolan Dermacolor 1 of 4

So recently I was asked to do some research about camouflage makeup, with it being something, I really have no clue about, I decided I would accept the "challenge" research and post my findings. So I have given myself some questions to answer, which seem to be floating about a lot and I tried to answer them as best as I could!

I am looking into camouflage make up because someone came to me recently and asked what would the best foundation be to cover a strawberry birthmark, and honestly, I have no idea, so I said I will have a look round and find some examples.

WHAT DID I FIND?
Camouflage make up is a complete mind field so I decided to do the typical thing, I googled "camouflage makeup" and the first thing that caught my eye was this little box to the right...

It shows me where, how much and what make I can buy of camouflage make up. I found this quite handy, however, I didn't click on it.

The next thing I looked at was what web pages came up. The top one was Kryolan- Dermacolor, this is an American site so I had to change my region. This is the page it came up with.

Clicking onto the "Foundation" section the page brought up a selection of  7 different foundations (3 of the same).

In turn I decided I would have a look at each separate foundation...

First I looked at the Dermacolor Body Camouflage. The fact that it states "does not need to be powdered" gives me the slight impression that it is a matte finish.

With a huge range of colours, there will most definitely be one for your skin. I like the fact that they have a green too. (Green counteracts redness)

The next foundation that I looked at was the Camouflage Creme, also comes in 30g and you can get it in a little compact set. As the page doesn't show the whole description, here is is;
"Dermacolor Camouflage Creme in a handy round packaging. Dermacolor Camouflage Creme is an especially highly pigmented make-up which is designed to correct and cover skin disfigurements, discolorations and tattoos. Dermacolor Camouflage Creme is especially suitable for face and neck. With proper use of the Dermacolor Camouflage System skin abnormalities can be easily corrected. Once Dermacolor Camouflage Creme is fixed using Fixing Powder and Fixing Spray from Dermacolor it will be waterproof and protects the skin against damaging UV radiation. Dermacolor Camouflage could last even under extreme conditions like swimming, heat and physical strain. Dermacolor Camouflage Creme is available in an extensive range of shades and those are intermixable which gives the make-up a natural appearance when applied correctly. ECARF certified."

Again, the range of shades and colours is amazing!

I then went to look at the fluid, there wasn't much difference to the others, other than the packaging and the range of colours.

There is a lot less colours for the fluid.

I went and looked at this "erase stick" to my thoughts and what I can see, it is simply a concealer stick and I imagine it works the same way as concealer does.

It surprises me that there is a larger range of colours than there is in the fluid.

This Twin Set caught my eye especially with the colours...

Reading into it, the creme is obviously the more toned section and the other part of the twin pack, is actually fixing powder.

On the page of each foundation there are "Pro Top Tips" and these are as follows;

  • For best results always warm the cream to body temperature by mixing it on the back of your hand.
  • To achieve a better coverage of the Dermacolor Camouflage Fluid let the product dry after application and re-apply. Repeat to build layers.

Having the Pro Tips is a really good idea, because that way, anyone new to the product, ie. me, can find out what to do to make the product better.
Also on each page, it tells you every ingredient, this is great for allergy advice etc.

The more I look through the site, the more I find out about the product. Each foundation needs to be set with a powder and/or fixing spray, these are also available on the website.

Fixing powder; sets and mattes the Dermacolor Creme and is available in two different sizes.
Fixing spray; Dermacolor Fixing Spray is used for extra protection of the camouflage. Especially suitable for hands and neck. Dermacolor Fixing Spray is applied after setting the camouflage with Dermacolor Fixing Powder. Dermacolor Fixing Spray is sprayed directly onto the skin from a distance of 20-30 cm. After drying the camouflage is smudge-proof. Easy washable with water and soap. Contains sun protection filter US-SPF 25/SPF 20.

SKIN CARE
On the site there is also a skin care and removal section, this consists of, cleanser, collagen cream and moisturizer. To me I don't think that any of the removal products will be any different to normal cleansers and moisturisers. Looking at the descriptions they really don't seem any different to normal cleaners and moisturisers. The site does recommend, like most makeup brands, that you remove make up with cleanser and moisturize after.

HOW IT WORKS
having read through the website at the foundations, I decided it would be a good idea to YouTube the product and see how well it actually works.

The first video I clicked on was a tattoo cover up..
Tattoo cover up
In this video it tells you how and shows you how to cover up a tattoo with the product, by the looks of things, you need a lot of products. However, it is waterproof and does actually cover up the tattoo really well.
The second video I looked at was a first impression review..
First impression review
The product is also Halal, I'm not 100% sure how that would work, however, the product she uses, is. As she starts applying the product in a stippling motion that is does infact cover everything.

As hard as I tried to find another video tutorial on the makeup, I honestly couldn't.

WHAT I THINK
I think this makeup actually looks really good.
Is is water proof?  Yes, but only if it is set with the fixing powder and the fixing spray.
How long will it last?  It will last a long time and not just 3-4 hours, you can also wear it to go swimming in.
Does it give a good coverage?  Yes, by watching the above videos, you can see that it really does work.
What about the range?  In all honesty, there is a huge range of products available, I specifically looked at foundations because that is all I was looking for.
Will it cover a strawberry birthmark?  As much as I tried to find a tutorial on this, I couldn't find one, however I am confident that it WILL cover a strawberry birthmark, but maybe with the help of a green concealer or base coat.
Is it matte?  Yes, it is matte, and it dries very fast. Although from what I can see, to matte the foundation correctly, you will need to add the fixing powder.

PRICE RANGE
The products aren't as expensive as I would have expected, with them being a professional selection. However, when you need 3-4 different products just for one application of make up, you are then looking to spend at least £40-£50, and in all honesty, the small pots really are small.

MY CONCLUSION
My conclusion is that the makeup WILL cover a strawberry birthmark very well and it will do what it is meant to do. A lot of camouflage makeup seems to me to just be all about covering tattoos, however, this is a make up that clearly covers everything. I would definitely give this makeup a try but I wouldn't use it on a day to day basis, maybe just for a going out look or if I was going on a long haul flight or a day away somewhere, due to the price and the amount you get in the tubs.
