Are Tattoos Really Fashionable?

No one really knows when the first ever tattoo came about and where from, but they do date back to the possible 1850's. Tattooing is one of the oldest and one of the most popular forms of body art. In the 19th century many french sailors returned from voyages in the south pacific with elaborate tattoos.

The above image is skin took from an executed criminal dating back to 1850-1900.

Since then, tattoos have come a long long way and are now a major part of body art and in some way "fashionable". Not a day goes by where you don't see at least one person with a visible tattoo nowadays. Some of them you just can't help but think to yourself "what were they thinking?!" and others "Wow! that's amazing!". From a chest piece to a sleeve, from a thigh piece to a spider on ones head, the varieties and places go on forever!

FOR
A lot of people see tattooing as a "dead end" job and that most tattoo artists are "hard" and don't care about life. In fact many tattoo artists have made a life out of tattooing. For example, Kat Von D. She has a tattoo studio called LA Ink, it also has it's own TV show! Kat Von D isn't just a tattoo artist, she is an artist and she is an actual human being with feelings, there has been episodes where Kat has broke down because of a personal situation. Kat's work is amazing! Here are some examples...

For me, and many people out there Kat has definitely made me feel like tattoos ARE fashionable. Tattooing isn't just a job, it's a career and many people including Kat have proved that to society.

AGAINST
A fair amount of the population really are against tattoos. I don't understand why, so I took the time to ask a few people who I know don't like or agree with them.

The questions I asked;

1- What don't you like about tattoos?
A- They are on your body for life and if they look rubbish there is nothing you can do.
A- They can look tacky and horrible.
A- It's a complete waste of money.

2- What about if a tattoo has a meaning?
A- They can only have a meaning for a certain amount of time. After that, it's just a memory.
A- It would depend what the meaning was.
A- No, get something sentimental, not a tattoo.

3- What about people that suit tattoos?
A- Some guys look hot with tattoos.
A- A lot of people just look silly walking round with great big tattoos.
A- Hmmm, I can't say I have ever seen anyone who suits them.

Some people have gone to extreme lengths to put their views across about tattoos by making facebook pages. For example, Tattoo-Free (and happy) as I look onto this page, the first thing is see is this post;

"ATTENTION all of you low-life, crud-brained, tattoo-liking fools:

Me expressing my disdain for your repulsive goop etchings (AKA tattoos) is NOT racism, it is not bigotry and it is not bullying. Let's get this straight: you yourselves CHOOSE to get tattoos and I am voicing distaste for that incorrect and ultimately idiotic choice.

That is so much different from people who say degrading things to people who were born a certain way. You were not born with tattoos, you were born a regular, clean human being and I have every right to let you know that you've made the wrong choice(s) in life. Get a grip and grow up you freaks!" - Admin

The above post was wrote by the admin of the page. Looking at this, he/she clearly does not like tattoos. However calling tattooed people "low-life" and "crud-brained" is rather a hell of a lot too far! However, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if this person does not like them and prefers the naturalness of the skin then so be it, you cannot disallow someone of their opinion. However, I would love to meet with this person and see if I can change their mind, as all of my tattoos are hidden and you would never know I have any, just by looking at me.

Not everyone likes tattoos and people just have to accept that. I personally love tattoos, but I can't stand tribal tattoos. As my cousin once said to me and my friend about tribal tattoos "In Canada, we don't put bumper stickers on our Ferraris". I agree with this saying, only because I don't like tribal tattoos.

RISKS
If you go to an unclean tattoo parlour or even any tattoo parlour, there are going to be risks involved, but clearly everyone like taking that risk.

  • HIV
  • Aids
  • Allergic reaction to the ink
  • Regret
  • Tetanus
  • Fading
  • Mistakes (e.g names)
Those a just a few. A lot of people with tattoos do regret their first tattoo they got, because most people got them when they were young and dumb, but there is an easy conclusion to that, a cover up or tattoo removal. Simple but not cost effective.

FOR
There are many different styles of tattoos that people go for, but most people actually plan what they want for some time, and possibly even draw it themselves. In my personal opinion tattoos need planning, not just walking into a tattoo studio, looking at a book and say "I want the butterfly with the unicorn" and then a week later, you're embarrassed to get your arm out! Tattoos don't NEED to have a meaning, if someone likes a tattoo and they think it's nice without a meaning then they don't need to make up a silly excuse for getting it.

If so many people were against tattooing then why isn't it illegal? Why do some people feel the need to make it extremely clear to the public that they have a hatred for them? This industry has done exceptionally well to this day, so why shouldn't it carry on?

A lot of my friends have tattoos and love tattoos, just as much as I do, but I have to admit, I do often think to myself "why?! Just why?!" because some of them, really are bad!

A very good friend of mine and someone I have known for many years now, likes tattoos that much that he has started to tattoo himself and others. With him still being in practice and not a professional, he can't exactly tattoo large portraits, However, the work what he has done, is really good.

To say he isn't professional his work is pretty up to scratch!

I'd like to share with you, my two favourite tattoos that I have, I have a total of 3, but these two in particular are my favourite and I'll explain why...

This tattoo goes from about an inch underneath my bra strap to 2" above my underwear line. It took a total of 4 agonising hours to complete, with little breaks in between. It is a gypsy head with two red roses and a banner. The banner says "Walking in fields of gold" that is the Eva Cassidy version of the song "fields of gold" it is my moms song. This tattoo has a deep meaning in my life. My mom is my world! I really do not know what i'd do without her. So I got this tattoo to represent my mom (she isn't a gypsy).

This tattoo is on my right thigh and is only quite small, approximately 5" wide and 6" tall. This tattoo has a huge meaning to me, the saying "hold on pain ends" spells out "hope" if you take the beginning letter of each word. This tattoo is a memorial tattoo for one of my best friends and to this day I love it! The tattoo artist who tattooed me, really really captured how I wanted it, all I said to him was "a lilly, an anchor and the words hold on pain ends around it" and this was the result. Thee tattoo artist works at Probody Hudds their work is amazing so definitely go check them out! (I apologize for the glare)

Onto one of my all time FAVOURITE youtubers! Melonlady (Helen Anderson). For those of you who don't know Melonlady, you should. You really should. Melon has tattoos, and some of them are amazing and do have meaning. Others are still just as amazing but they don't have meanings. So what? It doesn't matter. Melon has done a few videos on her channel about tattoos. Be sure to check her out! The videos I will share with you are...

WHAT NOT TO SAY TO A TATTOOED PERSON!
Melon really does understand!

MY TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS
She has a fair few, but who cares? She's still pretty!

Melon, also makes me feel that tattoos in this day and age, really ARE fashionable.

Many celebrities have tattoos too, and a lot of them really are covered, it's crazy. It's not just "regular" people that get them. For example...

David Beckham                               Miley Cyrus

  Harry Styles

Personally I think the majority of celebrities have tattoos. If the world is so against tattoos then why don't people and the papers make a huge uproar about them?

A lot of soldiers and war veterans also have tattoos, and they fight for their country, so this make them "low-life" and "crud-brained"? This one post I would like to add in from Tattoo-Free (and happy) just shows how much they think and feel not just about tattoos, but they clearly have a hatred for the military!

"A common stupid comment that I see spurted out by tattoo-havers is this: "X amount of the people in the military have tattoos and they protect your right to post your opinion on a Facebook page!"

There are so many things wrong with this pathetic sentiment. Firstly, I am not American, so your assumption there is off-base. I do not care whatsoever about the American troops. From what I've seen, they're all grossly entitled jerks who think that fighting in pointless wars somehow validates them as human beings. Newsflash: it doesn't. You're not special for doing something any brainless drone husk can do. Secondly, Facebook is a global domain, on which anyone has the right to post or say whatever they want. The United States military does not fight for this, nor will they ever. It's a right that anyone who can log on this site has. Finally, these people in the military who do choose to get tattoos are all criminal degenerates who couldn't fit in anywhere else in the world, so they signed up for the one program that would accept them. That's it. Stop making this comment, you only make yourselves look like total fools."

The Army/Military DO in fact encourage tattooing, for identification purposes and a hell of a lot of the time, their tattoos are VERY sentimental.

Everyone has their own opinion and everyone has their own feelings towards tattoos and that's how the world with always be. But maybe when it comes to tattoos people need to keep their opinion in their heads. If someone likes their tattoo then let them get on with it, you never know, they might end up regretting it shortly after getting it in the first place.

MY CONCLUSION
I honestly could ramble on forever about tattoos, but i'm not going to. My conclusion for this blog post is that tattoos ARE fashionable in this day and age. They are not just for criminals and people who just want to brand themselves. They are not always the best quality and don't always look nice, but then again, everyone is going to have different views on tattoos, what they do and don't like. With the majority of society having tattoos every day, the industry can only grow more and more. So to ME, tattoos ARE fashionable.

  1. The only thing I want to add, is tattoos are actually a lot older than back to 1850, I've seen a tattoo that has been preserved on someone for over 3,000 years. tattoos have also existed in tribes for hundreds of years, well before 1850 too. Like piercings and stretching ears/places, it all stems from tribes and have just made there way into out society, that's why tribal tattoos exist (I'm pretty sure anyway), while I personally don't like tribal tattoos either though. People can hate and dislike them, but they've been around a long time, well before they became known as something only criminals had done. :)
